Liz: Excellent and thoughtful post. Thank you. My own understanding of the love you are talking about comes from the writing of bell hooks in "All About Love: New Visions." She defines this love as our willingness to extend ourselves for the spiritual growth of oneself of another person.

I put it this way. I have experienced love, both as a giver and as a receiver. I trust that more love is always possible. I am meaning love here in the bell hooks sense. This trust in the possibility of love is at the core of my spiritual and religious life.

bell hooks is drawing on a tradition based in the work of Scott Peck and Erich Fromm.

So much of what you said resonates. I want to take real, tangible action. Not even protesting is enough we've got to make real change and save people.

At the same time, I see that most of us think that we have more control over these things than we really do.

And so in my Buddhist faith with the spreading of peace and love and interconnection from within, I fall back to the greatest parenting lesson: The best parenting in the world doesn't result in "nothing bad ever happening to your kid". It means that when bad things happen, and they will, your kid has some place to come. Someplace soft to land. Someplace where you can love them and comfort them and support them as they work through the awfulness and heal.

Sometimes that is the role of religion.

I believe wholeheartedly we should do everything that we can do. And at the same time, no that there is something that we can fall back into when these bad things are happening. They help us to be emotionally secure, inspired, feel safe, and have a foundation from which we can be brave enough to do the right thing, even knowing that bad things can and will happen to us and the people we love. And that really is about trust - and again not trust in a person or a creed, but that our faith group or belief group has us- has our backs, or our souls, hearts, and minds, as it were. Our actions come out of the trust and love and foundation of that covenant.
