Loved what Solnit said about collective action after that lone hero comment: “A huge amount of the work is done by nice ladies”

Great article! Thanks!

The tradition of a miraculous messianic savior has (imo) penetrated both left and right in the U.S. in harmful ways. There are different traditions around “messiah” but for some reason, it’s the most impractical and patriarchal one that has been adopted (“Big powerful figure, please rescue me as I’m too weak.”). It’s a disempowering story.

The challenge, as I see it, in what you’d like to see emerge, is that Sangha is part of a triad that includes Buddha and Dharma. Take out any one of these three legs of this stool and the stool falls. I think building this stool starts with Sangha but to stand, it will need to articulate some sort of “path of living” that will be grounded in some sort of “higher principle.” If the principle of the Sangha is only the well-being of the Sangha that is achieved by whatever each individual member of the Sangha thinks will be best for the well being of the Sangha—it’s unlikely to hold together. And those “in the Sangha” are likely to be at odds with those “outside of the Sangha.”

So yes, I love what Slonit said about Sangha and I love your “take” on her words. But I think it needs to be seen as a starting point, not a final destination. Thanks again for writing this. 😊
